Optical afterglow of the not so dark GRB 021211

چکیده
We determine Johnson B,V and Cousins R, I photometric CCD magnitudes for the afterglow of GRB 021211 during the first night after the GRB trigger. The afterglow was very faint and would have been probably missed if no prompt observation had been conducted. A fraction of the so-called “dark” GRBs may thus be just “optically dim” and require very deep imaging to be detected. The early-time optical light curve reported by other observers shows prompt emission with properties similar to that of GRB 990123. Following this, the afterglow emission from ∼ 11 min to ∼ 33 days after the burst is characterized by an overall power-law decay with a slope 1.1 ± 0.02 in the R passband. We derive the value of spectral index in the optical to near-IR region to be 0.6±0.2 during 0.13 to 0.8 day after the burst. The flux decay constant and the spectral slope indicate that optical observations within a day after the burst lies between cooling frequency and synchrotron maximum

متن کاملThe Early Light Curve of the Optical Afterglow of GRB 021211
The Katzman Automatic Imaging Telescope (KAIT) at Lick Observatory observed GRB 021211 starting 105 s after the burst, among the earliest observations of an optical afterglow to date. Our well-sampled light curve, consisting of 18 points in the first 10 min and a total of 28 useful observations in the first 2.5 hr after the GRB, directly shows for the first time a break at t ≈ 10 min. The light...
متن کاملA Unified Treatment of the Gamma-Ray Burst 021211 and Its Afterglow Emissions
The Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) 021211 detected by the High Energy Transient Explorer (HETE) II had a simple light-curve in the x-ray and gamma-ray energy bands containing one peak and little temporal fluctuation other than the expected Poisson variation. Such a burst offers the best chance for a unified understanding of the gamma-ray burst and afterglow emissions. We provide a detailed modeling of t...
متن کاملEarly-Time Chromatic Variations in the Wind-Swept Medium of GRB 021211 and the Faintness of its Afterglow
We present Follow-Up Network for Gamma-Ray Bursts (FUN GRB) Collaboration observations of the optical afterglow of GRB 021211 made between 143 seconds and 102 days after the burst. Our unique data set includes the earliest filtered detections and color information for an afterglow in the pre-Swift era. We find that the afterglow is best described by (1) propagation through a wind-swept medium, ...
متن کاملAnalysis of Two Scenarios for the Early Optical Emission of the GRB Afterglows 990123 and 021211
The optical light-curves of GRB afterglows 990123 and 021211 exhibit a steep decay at 100–600 seconds after the burst, the decay becoming slower after about 10 minutes. We investigate two scenarios for the fast decaying early optical emission of these GRB afterglows. In the reverse-forward shock scenario, this emission arises in the reverse shock crossing the GRB ejecta, the mitigation of the l...
